under the Calvary

The architectural concept of the family house is based on respecting the original character of the site and preserving its authentic atmosphere. The design works with the archetypal form of a rural house with a gable roof, reinterpreted through a contemporary architectural language. The building mass is carefully placed among existing mature trees, with emphasis on minimizing intervention in the site’s natural structure. The formal expression of the house is defined by a combination of pitched and flat roof geometries, creating a balanced relationship between traditional typology and a contemporary spatial composition. The two-storey volume respects the existing street alignment while orienting the main living spaces towards the garden and distant views of the nearby Calvary. The more pronounced roof slope towards the south visually reduces the scale of the building in relation to the garden space and enhances its integration into the landscape framework.

The spatial and functional concept is based on a continuous connection between interior and exterior spaces. Large-format glazing ensures a high level of natural daylight, visual continuity with the surrounding landscape, and a seamless extension of the living areas into outdoor spaces. The composition of the building also differentiates levels of openness — towards the street the house appears more introverted and compact, while towards the garden it becomes significantly more transparent and open. The building is founded on a monolithic foundation slab, which allowed the preservation of existing root systems of mature trees and minimized disturbance to the original terrain. The material palette is based on natural and durable materials, primarily wood and stone, which support the natural aging of the building and its harmonious integration into the environment.
The result is a compact residential structure with a rational spatial layout, which through its restrained architectural expression, careful handling of scale, and sensitive placement preserves the genius loci of the site.
